Bangladesh lose second West Indies T20I, suffer series loss
Bangladesh's timid approach with the bat undid another spirited bowling effort as the hosts slumped to a 14-run defeat against the West Indies in the second T20I in Chattogram on Wednesday, surrendering the three-match series with a game to spare.
Chasing a modest 150, Bangladesh once again appeared caught between aggression and caution, allowing the game to drift away despite wickets in hand. The chase never quite gained momentum after opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim's composed 48-ball 61 -- his ninth T20I fifty -- anchored the innings but he failed to inspire the required urgency. When the left-hander fell at the start of the 18th over, leaving Bangladesh at 117-4 and still needing 33 off 17 balls, a task that proved beyond reach as the rest crumbled under pressure.
Skipper Litton Das managed a 17-ball 23 -- having received a reprieve like Tanzid -- before being bowled by Akeal Hosein in the right over, but the sluggish contributions from Towhid Hridoy (12 off 14) and Jaker Ali (17 off 18) sapped all momentum. Jaker's innings, in particular, was detrimental to Bangladesh's cause, as he batted from the 13th to the 18th over without successfully taking the attack to the bowlers. He managed just two fours. The Tigers even failed to capitalise on dropped catches as all of their top four received one reprieve each.
Akeal (3-2) and Romario Shepherd (3-29) bowled smartly, while Jason Holder's used his experience to great effect as his miserly spell of 2-20 ensured Bangladesh's chase never got across the line. The loss marked Bangladesh's first T20I series defeat in five outings, ending a streak of four successive series wins.
Earlier, the hosts had staged an impressive comeback with the ball after West Indies appeared poised for a big total. Mustafizur Rahman (3-21) and Rishad Hossain (2-20) orchestrated a middle-order collapse that saw the visitors lose eight wickets for just 44 runs after a 105-run stand between Alick Athanaze and Shai Hope.
Athanaze smashed five sixes and three fours in a 33-ball 55, while Hope matched him with a 36-ball 55 featuring three sixes and as many boundaries. From 108 for one in the 12th over, the Windies were reined in to 149 for nine, with Nasum Ahmed also striking twice in one over to spark the turnaround.
Fizz and spinners trigger collapse to restrict West Indies to 149-9
Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad Hossain shone as Bangladesh produced staged a remarkable comeback to restrict West Indies to 149-9 in the second T20I of the three-match series in Chattogram on Wednesday.
West Indies were flying after Taskin Ahmed removed opener Brandon King (1 off 4) in the second over of the innings as Alick Athanaze and Shai Hope notched up blistering half-centuries to put the visitors on top after the initial setback. The duo put together a 105-run stand before Athanaze, who smashed five sixes and three fours for his 33-ball 55, was dismissed by Nasum Ahmed; the left-arm spinner castled Sherfane Rutherford in the same over, leaving West Indies at 108-3 after 12 overs.
The Fizz then got in on the act to remove the other set batter -- Hope, who put away three sixes and as many fours for a 36-ball 55. Rishad worked his magic to take out Rovman Powell (3 off 9) and Jason Holder (4 off 4) in the same over -- the 14th of the innings -- to amplify the collapse and the Fizz wrapped up the innings with two more in the final over.
Mustafizur starred with figures of 3-21 from his four overs, while Rishad (2-20) and Nasum (2-35) scalped two each.
