Champions Trophy 2025

New Zealand vs South Africa: Key stats

Two former Champions Trophy winners will battle for a spot in the tournament decider today in Lahore, looking to end their respective title droughts. Here's how the teams stack up:

South Africa face New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final on Wednesday in Lahore, looking to punch their ticket into Sunday's decider.

One of these teams will have the chance to end their Champions Trophy dry spell, after the Proteas finished on top in 1998 and then the Black Caps in 2000.

The clash also shapes as a higher stakes rematch after the pair clashed only last month at the same Lahore venue. The two competed in a Tri-series with hosts Pakistan in the lead-up to the tournament. The Black Caps will hope recent history repeats, after coming out on top by six wickets in that affair.

However, those South Africa were missing several of their regular faces, and tournament cricket is, of course, an entirely different proposition.

South Africa have shown in the group stages that they, like New Zealand, have what it takes to go all the way.

HIGHLIGHTS

* South Africa and New Zealand have locked horns 73 times in ODIs, with the Proteas holding a dominant record, winning 42 matches compared to Black Caps' 26 wins.

* It's, however, even-steven between the two in the ICC Champions Trophy, with South Africa winning one and New Zealand winning the other in the two sides' two meetings in the tournament.

*South Africa and New Zealand have played no bilateral white-ball cricket against each other since 2017 but played each other at the 2019 and 2023 World Cups and won a game a piece and the Pakistan tri-nation series, in a match which New Zealand won. In ICC tournaments, they have met 11 times, and New Zealand have won seven of those games.

*South Africa are the only country to have qualified for the knockouts of all of the last seven ICC events - across men's, women's and Under-19 tournaments. That includes the 2023 men's ODI World Cup semi-final, the 2024 men's T20 World Cup final, the 2025 World Test Championship final, the 2024 men's Under-19 World Cup semi-final, the 2024 women's T20 World Cup final and the 2025 women's Under-19 final.
