Bono supports refugees
Rockstar Bono has offered support to the Syrian refugees fleeing their homes. He changed the chorus of a U2 song mid-concert to help raise awareness of their cause and requested the audience to contribute towards helping them. The European leg of U2's world tour started this week, and the front man and activist addressed the audience and put up his support for the cause.
A young Syrian boy washed ashore in Turkey last week, which caused a mass uprising around the world and requests for European governments to do more in helping the tens of thousands of refugees. The photo of Aylan Kurdi, face down in the sand, made headlines around the world, becoming a focal point in the deepening refugee crisis.
In a set that included more than two dozen of the band's songs and at one point featured a screen showing footage of refugees, Bono said: “There is a lot of heartache in the world, but there is so much joy in here this evening.” The lyrics for U2's iconic track Pride (In the Name of Love) was changed from “One man come in the name of love, One man come and go” to: "One boy washed up on an empty beach."
He iterated on how people are capable of doing evil things but also have the capacity of accomplishing vastly great things and urged everyone to “work together to find an answer to the refugee crisis in Europe and Africa.” To add as encouragement, no matter how unattainable the solution for such a widespread issue may seem at the moment, the pop star quoted Nelson Mandela and stated that “It always seems impossible until it is done.”
