Rohingya crisis a ‘humanitarian disaster’
Terming the ongoing Rohingya crisis "a humanitarian disaster", Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Abul Hossain today urged the international community to play an effective role to resolve the crisis.
The BGB chief said this while speaking at the "First International Symposium on Land and Maritime Border Security and Safety: Challenges and Solutions" in Jeddah yesterday, according to a BGB press release issued today.
Bangladesh has given shelter to the displaced Rohingya people on humanitarian ground after they fled persecution and atrocities by Myanmar army, BGB DG Hossain said, adding that in doing so Bangladesh has set an example of generosity and humanity before the world.
International media has lauded Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's efforts to give shelter to the hapless Rohingyas and given her the title of "Mother of Humanity", he also said.
The BGB chief was the keynote speaker of a paper titled "National, Regional and International Cooperation and its Effectiveness to Enhance Border Security and Safety- Past, Present and Future" presented on the fourth day of the programme yesterday, the release read.
The five-day long programme was held from October 15 to October 19, organised by the General Directorate of Saudi Border Guard, Ministry of Interior, Saudi Arabia under the supervision of the Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdul Aziz bin Saud bin Baif bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud.
This conference is the first in the series of symposiums that provides a forum for the relevant authorities and global experts to promote knowledge and exchange ideas and information that will enhance land and maritime border security and safety at national, regional and international levels.
