JCD leaders set fire to motorbikes at Nayapaltan
A group of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders protesting “nepotism” in formation of its new committee today set fire to at least three motorbikes in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka.
“Most leaders of the 736-member full-fledged JCD committee have been selected through nepotism, depriving the qualified ones of the posts,” Rakibul Islam Royal, a vice-president of the JCD, told journalists at the party office in Dhaka today.
On Saturday night, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia approved the 736-member committee of her party’s student wing comprising leaders, most of whom are nonstudents.
The committee was announced around 15 months after its 151-member partial committee was declared in October 2014.
“A pocket committee was formed in exchange of money. We will not obey any instruction of such biased committee,” Rakib said.
Earlier, the agitated JCD leaders and activists led by Rakibul Islam brought out a procession in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office around 4:00pm, said Morshed Alam, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station.
At one point, they went on the rampage and set fire to at least three motorbikes. The agitated JCD activists also ransacked a shop, he added.
On information, police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control.
None was injured or arrested in connection with the incident, the police officer added.
