No legal bar for execution now: Attorney General
Now that the Supreme Court has disposed of the review petitions of war criminals Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, there is no legal barrier now for execution of the verdict awarding them death penalty, the attorney general says.
“The trial process of the cases has ended through today’s verdicts. Now, there is no legal bar for execution of the verdicts,” AG Mahbubey Alam told reporters after the SC ruling maintaining its previous decision upholding International Crimes Tribunal verdict.
Regarding presidential clemency, their last chance for life, the AG said now there is no time bar for SQ Chowdhury and Mojaheed to seek mercy. “They may be asked whether they would seek clemency. If they do, their prayers will be sent to the president.”
Terming the verdicts as “another victory succeeding the Liberation War” he said: “We are happy that Mojaheed has been awarded death penalty for killing intellectuals during the Liberation War.”
