Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today called upon the countrymen to remain alert in any circumstance.

“There is no reason to be complacent that what happened in Sri Lanka will not take place in Bangladesh,” Quader said while addressing a function at the party’s Bangabandhu Avenue office in Dhaka this noon.

On June 15, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said that the police will knock every house in the capital throughout this week to update citizen information as part of its preventive measures to avert any untoward incident.

Quader, also the minister for Road Transport and Bridges, called upon the countrymen to remain alert in any circumstance recalling the memories of Holey Artisan Café in the capital’s Gulshan area on July 1, 2016.

A total of 20 hostages, mostly foreign nationals, and two police officials were killed during the 12-hour standoff.

“The capital Dhaka turned into a ghost town after the Gulshan café attack,” Quader said.

About BNP’s imprisoned Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s bail, Quader said the government would not interfere if the court grants bail to the BNP chief.

“We are very respectful to the judiciary. There will be no objection from the government if the court grants her (Khaleda) bail,” Quader said.

Referring to BNP Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed’s recent remark that their party chief would get released from jail on bail by the current week, Quader said Moudud might have thought that the court would grant her (Khaleda) bail.

“I am sure that there will be no interference from the government. We are respectful to the independence of the judiciary. The court has awarded her (Khaleda) punishment and it can also release her from the imprisonment,” he said.
