'Military, rebels use this type of grenades'
The grenades hurled at the Awami League (AL) rally yesterday are usually used by the military, but insurgents also carry those, said an officer of the Rapid Action Battalion-2 (Rab).
At least two grenades remained unexploded on Bangabandhu Avenue just opposite the AL headquarters but no explosive expert was available even two hours after the blasts.
At around 7:00pm a Rab team turned up. Some newspersons present there informed them of the grenades. The Rab members went to examine those but then failed due to insufficient light.
However, later a Rab officer could examine a grenade with the beam of his cellphone.
A 35-member army contingent led by Captain Shams diffused the other grenade in the early hours today.
Both grenades were of 'Urges-84' brand and made in China, usually used by Bangladesh Army, the experts said. They said each grenade weighs over one kilogram and contains around 36,000 splinters.
Police suspect some more grenades may be lying at the spot.
