BNP spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the party would take “right course of actions” in light of the changes in the global political trend to restore the country’s democracy.

While speaking at a programme in Dhaka marking the 1/11 political changeover of the country in 2007, the acting secretary general of the party vowed to realise their demand through holding of a national election under a non-party government.

Amid a grave political situation over parliamentary polls slated for January 22 in 2007, the then president Iajuddin Ahmed was forced to resign as chief adviser of the caretaker government and declare a state of emergency on the night of January 11.

A section of army officials led by then chief of Army Staff Moyeen U Ahmed had played a crucial role in the changeover amid growing political turmoil mainly caused by the then Awami League-led opposition alliance's street agitation to resist the January 22 polls.

Addressing a discussion organized by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Bhashani auditorium at city’s Nayapaltan to mark the ninth anniversary of 1/11, Fakhrul said there has been a change in global politics and that is why now people talk less about democracy

Fakhrul added: “We will have to cope with the changed global situation by bringing change in our political thinking, activities and programmes.

We will have to properly realise the situation and take the right step to force this fascist government to restore democracy, people’s rights and hold an election under a neutral government.”

Fakhrul asked the party men to use mobile and Information Communication Technology to spread information about the government’s misdeeds, failure and corruption and mobilise public support.
