City polls: Taposh, Atiqul submit nomination paper

Awami League leader Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and incumbent Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor M Atiqul Islam today submitted their nomination papers separately to contest the January 30 mayoral polls in Dhaka South and North City Corporations.   

Riding on a off-white colour SUV carrying sticker of the Member of Parliament, Taposh submitted his nomination paper to the temporary office of Returning Officer at Valiant Freedom Fighter Sadeque Hossain Khoka Community Center in Gopibagh of Dhaka.

On December 29, Taposh resigned as Dhaka-10 lawmaker to contest the mayoral polls.

Meanwhile, DNCC Mayor M Atiqul Islam submitted his nomination papers at the RO's office in Agargaon around 12:00pm.

The upcoming city polls will be fair, participatory and competitive and , he hoped while talking to journalists.

Taposh was accompanied by AL leader Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and Mahbubul Alam Hanif.

AL supporters and activists in huge numbers gathered in front of the community center and chanted party slogans, though EC office repeatedly request candidates not to accompany more than two persons during submission of nomination papers.

Returning Officer accepted his nomination paper.

Asked whether he violated electoral code of conduct, Taposh said, "Many councilors come here to submit nomination papers. That's why the crowd was created."
