DU student alliance calls strike Jan 29
The left-leaning student alliance of Dhaka University, Progressive Students’ Alliance, today called for a strike at all educational institutions across the country on January 29 protesting yesterday’s assault on students by Chhatra League.
At campus, they will hold a rally at the base of Raju Sculpture on January 26, Imran Habib, coordinator of the alliance, made the announcement at Madhur Canteen this afternoon.
The alliance also announced of holding nationwide demonstration on January 28.
Meanwhile, another banner of Dhaka University students, in another press conference, pressed for a five-point demand including a fair investigation of the yesterday’s attack.
Videos of the assault where even the girls were not spared went viral overnight and condemnations flooded the social media platforms. About 50 students were injured, some hospitalised.
It all started with demonstration against Dhaka University’s affiliation with seven colleges, what the general students wanted the university to get rid of.
Chhatra League foiled one such demonstration a few days ago, fueling the students to bar the vice chancellor to demand proper punishment of the responsible assaulters.
Things took a dramatic turn yesterday, when Chhatra League stepped in to free the vice chancellor from the cordon of the demonstrating students, using fists and feet.
