Decision on polls deferral tomorrow: CEC

The Election Commission tomorrow will take the decision whether the schedule for the 11th parliamentary elections will be differed or not, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said today.

“I didn’t get any application regarding the change in polls schedule till now. I can’t say anything right now … The decision will be informed tomorrow (Monday),” he told reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon, reports BSS.

Earlier, Jatiya Oikyafront submitted a letter to the Election Commission requesting it to defer the parliamentary polls date by a month.

A delegation led by Bijon Kanti Sarker, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, handed over the letter to the commission in person this afternoon.

Besides, AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury-led Juktofront has called upon the Election Commission to reschedule the election date on December 30.

His made the call on November 8, hours after Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the schedule for the 11th parliamentary election to be held on December 23.

ELECTION SCHEDULE

The Election Commission announced the election schedule on November 8. The 11th parliamentary election will be held on December 23.

According to the schedule, the last date for filing nomination papers for candidacy is November 19. The returning officers will scrutinise the nomination papers on November 22 while the last date for withdrawing candidacy is November 29.

OIKYAFRONT’S LETTER TO EC

Jatiya Oikyafront today wrote to the Election Commission requesting it to defer the parliamentary polls date by a month.

A delegation led by Bijon Kanti Sarker, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, handed over a letter to the commission in person. After submitting the latter, Bijon Kanti Sarker reveal the content of the latter.

Besides, the BNP-led 20-party alliance also wrote to the commission confirming that the opposition alliance will contest in the 11th parliamentary election with BNP’s polls-symbol ‘sheaf of paddy’.
