A Dhaka court today placed Bachchu Mia on a three-day remand in connection with the murder of Mahbub Alam, a 57-year-old retired army personnel.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order after police produced Bachchu before the court with a seven-day remand prayer, according to a sub-inspector working at the court.

Bachchu was arrested yesterday from the area near Hotel Avalon Park in Chattogram’s Chawkbazar, after investigators found evidence linking him to the incident, said the police forwarding report.

On January 16, Mahbub, who worked as a bodyguard, was critically injured during an abduction on road-12 in sector-14 of Dhaka's Uttara. He died while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) two days after the attack.

On January 17, Mahbub’s son Abdullah Ismay Azam filed an attempted murder case with Uttara West Police Station against six unnamed persons, which was later converted into a murder case.

According to the case statement, Mahbub was employed through a security services company and had a licensed 12-gauge shotgun.

On January 16 at 2:51pm, he left his home. At 6:48pm, while he was standing in front of a house in Uttara's sector-14, a white Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, a Nissan X-Trail, and a motorcycle arrived.

As Mahbub opened the Prado’s door to let a person get down, four men from the X-Trail and two from the motorcycle attacked him. One assailant struck him on the head with a stick, while another fractured his jaw with his (Mahbub's) own shotgun. The attackers then seized the shotgun and forcibly abducted the man who had exited the Prado, putting him into the X-Trail.

Police have yet to trace the abducted man or his family members.

Kamrul Islam, sub-inspector of Uttara West Police Station and investigating officer, said tonight, “We have already arrested one man in connection with the incident. We hope we will get something after interrogating him.”
