Ex-speaker Jamiruddin Sircar relieved in 5 graft cases
A Dhaka court today relieved former speaker Jamiruddin Sircar from the charges of five graft cases after he refunded the state Tk 27,86,364, which he withdrew for treatment during his tenure.
Judge Prodip Kumar Roy of Dhaka's Special Judge Court-7 passed the order after Jamir's lawyer submitted the payment slips from the banks.
Earlier on March 12, the same court ordered Jamiruddin Sircar to refund the amount by today in line with another order issued by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
On August 25, 2022, the Supreme Court quashed all five cases filed against Jamiruddin on charges of misappropriating Tk 27.86 lakh in the name of treatment abroad, said an official of the court.
The apex court also directed Jamiruddin to refund the money.
But the trial proceedings against another accused Ashraf-ul-Islam will continue, the SC said.
The PP said Jamiruddin was found guilty and thus the SC directed him to refund the money which he withdrew from the government exchequer.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on December 28, 2010, filed cases against three people, including Jamiruddin, with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital.
Two others are former speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui and Ashraf-ul-Islam, former chief accounts officer of the Parliament Secretariat.
The anti-graft body pressed charges against the three on November 7, 2012.
On May 30, 2013, Judge Md Zahirul Haque of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court accepted the charges against them.
Following the order, Jamiruddin filed five separate writ petitions for quashing the trial proceedings of the cases. After hearing, the HC in a judgment said the trial will continue.
Jamiruddin then moved to the SC, which later scraped the HC order and quashed all five cases on August 25 last year and directed him to refund the money.
Meantime, the court dropped the name of Akhtar Hamid since he died earlier.
