A power grid failure disrupted electricity supply across 21 districts this evening.

At 5:45pm, a technical fault in the national power grid led to outages, disconnecting Barishal division and parts of Khulna division from the national network.

According to the Power Grid Bangladesh PLC, the situation has since returned to normal.

The blackout lasted from 5:49pm to 6:52pm, confirmed Monjul Kumar Swarnakar, executive engineer of the West Zone Power Development Company Limited (WZPDCL).

Another official of WZPDCL, requesting anonymity, said the blackout happened due to a problem at the Amin Bazar national grid in Gopalganj.

He added that the grid plays a crucial role in supplying electricity to the Southwestern region.

"The centre is an important transmission hub for electricity generated from the Rampal and Payra thermal power plants," he said.

Md Akhtaruzzaman Palash, executive engineer of the Barishal Power Grid, said that although the issue originated outside Barishal division, it triggered outages in several areas.

"However, power supply has now been restored," he added.

Officials are currently assessing the extent of the disruption caused by the failure.
