The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance has announced seat allocations for 253 constituencies ahead of the 13th parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12.

Jamaat will contest 179 seats, the National Citizen Party (NCP) 30, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish led by Mamunul Haque 20, Khelafat Majlish 10, Liberal Democratic Party seven, AB Party three, and Nizame Islami Party and Bangladesh Development Party two seats each, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammed Taher said at a press conference.

The crowded briefing was held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Dhaka’s Kakrail area, with Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB), one of the key components of the alliance, boycotting the programme.

It is yet to be decided how many seats will be allocated to Bangladesh Khelafat Andolon and Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (Jagpa), two other components of the alliance, Taher said. Although Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) boycotted the briefing, 47 seats have been reserved for them.

If any seats are later allocated to Bangladesh Khelafat Andolon or Jagpa, the number of seats available for IAB could potentially be reduced, Jamaat sources said.

Amid confusion and uncertainty over its continued participation in the alliance, IAB has said that it would brief the media on the electoral alliance at its central office at 3:00pm tomorrow.
