The BNP expressed dissent regarding the proposal of a two-term limit for an individual serving as prime minister, proposing an alternative in which an individual may serve another term after taking a break following two consecutive terms.

"We have said that although a person should not serve more than two consecutive terms as prime minister, they should be allowed to return to the position after a gap," Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the party's Standing Committee, said.

He made these remarks to journalists during the lunch break of today's meeting between the BNP and the National Consensus Commission at LD Hall of the National Parliament Building.

Salahuddin mentioned that following the BNP's suggestion, the commission has drafted a new proposal regarding term limits for the prime minister, but they do not wish to make it public yet. The proposal will first be discussed within party forums.

He also said that the BNP has suggested an addition to Article 48(3) of the constitution to expand the powers of the president beyond what currently exists.

"This will later be discussed in parliament," he added.

The BNP agrees with the commission's proposal that the president should be elected by members of both houses of Parliament.

Salahuddin further said that the BNP does not agree with the commission's proposal that the same person cannot simultaneously serve as the head of government, the head of the party, and the leader of the parliament.

"We proposed to keep this matter open. Because, we don't see a practice where the same person cannot be both head of government and party leader," he said.

Referring to the 15th amendment of the constitution, Salahuddin said that the BNP has proposed reverting to the previous version regarding the preamble of the constitution.

He mentioned that there was no mention of secularism or pluralism in that version. However, the commission has proposed incorporating the principles of equality, human dignity, and social justice as stated in the Declaration of Independence, and the BNP agrees with this.

Salahuddin also said that the BNP supports the proposal to include internet access as a fundamental right in the constitution.

"This already exists. Now, it just needs to be ensured that the state cannot arbitrarily shut down internet access," he said.

"We have agreed with most of the commission's proposals. There are still some issues that require further analysis," he added.
