Yunus to lead commission to reach political consensus on reforms

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus today announced that he will lead a "National Consensus Forming Commission" with an aim to reach a consensus among all political parties regarding reform on different issues.
In his televised address to the nation marking the Victory Day, he said that the commission will be able to start their work from next month after getting the recommendations of six vital reform commissions on constitution, electoral system, judiciary, police administration, anti-corruption commission and public administration.
"Any reform needs political consensus. What will be the process of reaching this consensus?" Yunus said in his address.
He hoped that the six reform commissions will submit their final report soon.
"We're moving towards establishing a national consensus forming commission comprising the chairmen of the six commissions," he said.
Its task will be to exchange views with all stakeholders, including political parties, to identify the issues on which consensus will be established and make recommendations for implementation.
"Since establishing national consensus is the most important responsibility of the interim government, I will act as the chairman of this commission," Yunus added.
Professor Ali Riaz, who is the chief of the constitution reform commission will be the vice-president of this consensus forming commission.
The commission can co-opt new members if it deems necessary, he said.
"The first task of the new commission will be to build an early consensus on all the decisions that are necessary for holding elections and finalising suggestions on when elections can be held after consultation with all," Yunus added.
