Two schools set on fire in Netrokona

Separate probe committees formed

Two schools in Netrokona Sadar upazila were set on fire early today, destroying large parts of a government primary school and causing partial damage to a nearby secondary school.

The fire, allegedly started by miscreants around 3:00am, completely destroyed three classrooms and a teachers' room at Monang Government Primary School in Madanpur union. At nearly the same time, the verandah of nearby Shaziura Mofila Faiz Model High School was also set on fire, partially damaging one of its doors.

Residents rushed to douse the flames but most of the primary school building was reduced to ashes. The blaze at Shaziura High School was quickly brought under control, preventing major damage.

Upon receiving the news, the local Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), administration officials and police visited the sites this morning.

Mahmuda Begum, assistant teacher and acting head of Monang Government Primary School, said academic activities were suspended due to the destruction.

Netrokona Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahnewaz said, "No one has been arrested so far. Police are investigating the cause of the incident and working to identify those involved."

Sadar UNO Asma Binte Rafiq said, "We have inspected the scene. Two separate five-member investigative committees have been formed regarding the arson attacks. They have been instructed to submit their reports within the next seven working days."
