Tarique Rahman offers prayers at father's grave after 19 years
After 19 years, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today visited the grave of his father and party founder Ziaur Rahman.
Tarique, accompanied by senior party leaders, placed wreaths and offered prayers at the grave at 4:50pm.
Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), police and the army barred media personnel and party activists from entering the grave area and its surroundings.
While Tarique was paying respects, party leaders and activists gathered in front of the entrance and chanted slogans.
He stood alone for some time in front of his father's grave.
Only senior party leaders were allowed inside the grave area.
Ahead of Tarique's arrival, law enforcement personnel had been deployed in and around the area from 12:00pm.
Visitors inside the park were kept at a safe distance, and no one was allowed to approach the grave.
Around 1:00pm, a large number of party leaders and activists began gathering around the area, carrying banners and photographs of the party leader and joining small processions.
Tarique left his Gulshan residence by bus and reached the grave area after nearly two hours. His convoy moved slowly from Bijoy Sarani to the grave amid heavy crowds of party leaders and activists.
During the journey, Tarique waved to the gathered supporters
Party sources said Tarique last visited Ziaur Rahman's grave on September 1, 2006.
