National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam today criticised political parties signing the July Charter, saying they were "misleading the public" by portraying it as a national consensus.

Speaking at the launch of an affiliate organisation -- 'Jatiya Sramik Shakti' -- at Eskaton in Dhaka, Nahid said, "Some political parties are deceiving people in the name of national consensus by signing the July Charter."

He argued that a meeting of a few parties cannot be considered national unity. "National unity is when workers and people from various professions come together to work for the country's welfare and fight for their rights. But there is no discussion about the labour commission or the health sector," he said.

Nahid further criticised the formation of what he described as an election-centric six-reform commission, saying, "We could not see any good intention regarding democracy from them."

Calling for broader reforms, he said, "We believe that along with the struggle for democratic transformation, we must also continue the economic transformation. We must break free from the development narrative of the past and place human dignity above all in Bangladesh."

Highlighting the role of workers, Nahid added, "Jatiya Sramik Shakti will stand beside those who keep the country's economy running."
