RMG workers stop demo at CEPZ after receiving half of Eid bonus

After receiving half of their Eid-ul-Fitr bonuses, workers and staff of a readymade garment factory at the Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) put an end to protests that had been ongoing since yesterday.

The workers of Modiste (CEPZ) Ltd of JMS group, who had organised a sit-in outside the premises of the CEPZ administrative building due to unpaid wages and Eid bonuses, have now left for home, confirmed Mohammad Solaiman, superintendent of police (SP) of Industrial Police (Chattogram region).

Factory management has assured the completion of the rest of the payment within April 16, the SP went on to say.

Earlier yesterday, several hundred workers of the factory had staged demonstrations for five hours until management promised to start payment by the same evening.

Not having received the promised payment, workers had resumed protests this morning at 9:00am, closing two major entry gates at CEPZ.
