'Govt has no connection with July proclamation'

Shafiqul Alam says it's a private initiative

The government has no involvement in the initiative to proclaim the July mass uprising as a revolution led by Students Against Discrimination on December 31, according to Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

"This is a private initiative. We are treating it as a private matter. It is not related to the government, and there is no involvement of the government," the press secretary told reporters in front of the state guest house Jamuna.

"Whoever is supporting this initiative is supporting a private effort. The government has no connection with it," he added.

In response to a reporter's question, Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said, "It is solely a matter for the students. It has nothing to do with the government."

The Proclamation of the July Revolution, which student leaders claim will include a framework for a country free of discrimination, is set to be unveiled by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The group, which played a key role in the July uprising that led to the ouster of the Awami League government, announced the initiative on Facebook.

Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, posted about the upcoming proclamation on social media late last night.
