Gopalganj clashes: one more injured dies at DMCH, death toll rises to 5

A man who suffered bullet injuries during the recent clashes in Gopalganj died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) today, raising the death toll from the incident to five.

Ramzan Munshi, 32, a rickshaw puller from Gopalganj Sadar upazila, was injured during a clash between law enforcement personnel and activists of the banned Awami League and its student wing on July 16.

He succumbed to his injuries around 1:45am today, confirmed Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost.

"He was brought in with bullet injuries and had been in critical condition since his admission," the official said.

His body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

The victim's brother said, "On July 16, he went out in the morning as usual and later reached the Chourangi Launchghat area, where clashes broke out. He was shot during the violence and rushed to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital."

"From there, he was transferred to DMCH around 12:30am that night," he added.

At least four others were killed and dozens injured in daylong running battles in Gopalganj on Wednesday, after local Awami League men allegedly attacked leaders and activists of the Nationalist Citizen Party (NCP) and vandalised their rally venue.
