First-year RU social work students lodge ragging complaint against seniors

Proctorial body caught a group of seniors red-handed while ragging

First-year students of Rajshahi University's Department of Social Work have lodged a written complaint with the proctor's office, accusing immediate seniors of subjecting them to ragging over several days.

According to the complaint, members of the 2023-24 batch forced juniors to repeatedly introduce themselves, mocked them, and compelled them to perform "ten types of smiles". Juniors said they were insulted with obscene language, and were called "homosexuals". Moreover, Hindu students were ridiculed for offering salam while being ragged.

One victim, seeking anonymity, said that on September 3, around 18-20 seniors allegedly forced juniors to recite obscene poems, tell vulgar stories, and hold their ears as punishment.

The complaint also noted that on Sunday, juniors were made to sit in the rain from noon until 2:30pm without food, until the proctorial body intervened.

Proctor Mahbubur Rahman confirmed receiving the complaint and said, "We caught them [senior students] red-handed today. We will definitely bring them under disciplinary action."
