Fascist motif rebuilt overnight after vandalism with spirit of resistance

A day before the traditional Anondo Shobhajatra procession, a motif depicting a "monstrous fascist face" -- symbolising last year's student-led mass uprising -- was set ablaze.
However, the act of vandalism failed to dampen the spirit of the artists and students of Dhaka University's Faculty of Fine Art. Working tirelessly through the night, they managed to reconstruct the piece in time for the procession brought out around 9:00am today as part of Pahela Baishakh celebrations.
"This year we had planned a surprise for the procession," said AAM Kaoser Hassan, member secretary of the Shobhajatra sub-committee. "The attack did not break the spirit of the students and artists. They worked hard to bring something new and defiant in response."
The original motif had drawn attention for its bold symbolism -- depicting a grotesque face representing authoritarianism and the oppressive regime students helped topple last year.
Azharul Islam, member secretary of the central coordination committee for Nababarsha 1432 celebrations, said the artists' quick response was a testament to their dedication.
"With immense dedication and quick action, the artists managed to rebuild the motif in a very short time," he said. "Their perseverance reflects the spirit of the New Year celebration."
The Anondo Shobhajatra, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is celebrated today with vibrant colours, traditional motifs, and spirited participation across the capital.
