Ensure extradition, trial of Hasina

The Network for Democratic Bangladesh, an activist organisation comprising pro-July uprising expatriates, has called for the trial of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and all individuals responsible for crimes against humanity during the movement.
The group demanded accountability for human rights violations, enforced disappearances, killings, corruption, and money laundering under the previous Awami League-led regime.
In a virtual press conference yesterday, members of the organisation also called for the disbandment of the Rab, National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC), and other repressive forces that were allegedly used to suppress protests and target dissent during the AL's rule.
Writer Barnaali Saha, a member of the network, said human rights violations during the uprising were orchestrated under the direct supervision and coordination of the then-political leadership and security forces.
The network called for the immediate filing of charges and a transparent trial under the ICT to hold the perpetrators accountable.
The group also urged the interim government to seek the extradition of Hasina from India to face trial in Bangladesh for her alleged role in the crimes.
Azfar Hussain, associate professor at Grand Valley State University in the US, said they called for an end to the protection of Hasina in India, as she is accused of internationally recognised crimes against humanity.
He demanded that India cease providing her refuge and ensure her return to Bangladesh to face justice.
