Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal today staged a demonstration demanding justice for Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo, who was stabbed to death near Suhrawardy Udyan late last night.

Several hundred activists took part in the procession on campus.

JCD staged a protest march around 2:30pm at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture.

From there, activists marched around the Faculty of Arts building and later gathered in front of the Vice-Chancellor's residence.

The ogranisation has demanded the resignation of the VC, the proctor and the home adviser of the interim government.

Nasir Uddin Nasir, general secretary of the JCD's central committee, said, "As the highest guardian of the university, the vice-chancellor cannot avoid responsibility for this murder. Two major incidents after the August uprising prove his utter failure. We demand the resignation of both the proctor and the VC. We also urge the resignation of the home affairs adviser, as a private university student named Parvez was also recently stabbed to death in a similar manner."

"The administration formed after August 5 has failed to ensure a student-friendly environment," said said Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos, president of DU JCD.

"Multiple incidents, including the attack on a university bus and the fire incident before Pahela Baishakh, have left students traumatised," he added.

Ashraful Islam Rafi, a fellow student, said Shammo, hailing from Ullapara in Sirajganj, was a student of the Institute of Education and Research (2018–19 session).

Rafi said Shammo was riding his motorcycle near Suhrawardy Udyan when it collided with another bike. This led to an altercation and a scuffle. At one-point, unidentified individuals stabbed him in the right thigh before fleeing.

He was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Earlier today, police arrested three persons in connection with the killing.

Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division Police, said the arrestees are outsiders. They are Tamim Hawlader, 30, Samrat Mallic, 28, and Palash Sarder, 30.
