DMC suspends MBBS classes amid student protest, orders to vacate halls

The authorities also directed all students to vacate their hostels by 12:00pm tomorrow

Dhaka Medical College authorities today announced the suspension of all academic activities for MBBS students for an indefinite period starting tomorrow, amid ongoing student protests demanding renovation of academic and residential buildings.

In a notice issued following an emergency meeting of the academic council, the authorities also directed all students to vacate their hostels by 12:00pm tomorrow.

However, the notice would not be applicable for foreign students and for those appearing for the university professional MBBS examinations.

The Daily Star has obtained a copy of the notice. Prof Md Kamrul Alam, principal of Dhaka Medical College, could not be reached for comment.

Abdullah Al Noman, a fourth-year student of the medical college, told this correspondent that they would not follow the authority decision to vacate halls and will continue their protests.

He said the old academic building and the Dr Fazle Rabbi Hostel for male students and Dr Alim Chowdhury Women Hostel are in dire condition and no longer suitable for academic or residential use.

So, the students have been boycotting the classes from May 28 seeking renovation of buildings and involvement of students in this process to ensure transparency, he said.
