BJIM condemns surge in attacks on journalists, urges govt action

Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media (BJIM) has expressed deep concern over the rising number of attacks on journalists across the country, calling for immediate government action to ensure press freedom and justice.
In a press statement released recently on their official Facebook page, BJIM condemned multiple incidents of violence against journalists, including a brutal attack on BanglaVision's Kuakata reporter, Jahirul Islam Miron. Miron was hacked with sharp weapons in front of his house on Tuesday evening and remains in critical condition.
The statement also highlighted Wednesday's assault on ATN News TV's senior reporter, Jabed Akhter, who was physically attacked allegedly by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activists while on duty. Two other journalists were also injured in the incident.
On the same day, Ekattor TV staff member Syed Mainul Ahasan Maruf and his colleagues, including their workplace driver, were assaulted while covering the demolition of a museum linked to the country's ousted prime minister's family. Additionally, independent24.tv staff reporter Mohammad Omar Farok was attacked by protestersfor refusing to follow their instructions during a live news report.
BJIM described the surge in violence as "alarming" and a sign of a "culture of impunity" that threatens press freedom in Bangladesh. The group urged the interim government to take swift action against the perpetrators, emphasising that such incidents were not expected under the new administration, which had replaced an autocratic regime notorious for media suppression.
The statement also called for proper medical care for the injured journalists until they fully recover.
