24 parties sign July Charter at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban
Out of 30 political parties engaged in the dialogues leading up to the National July Charter, representatives of 24 parties signed the charter today. The event, held at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, was organised by the National Consensus Commission.
The BNP delegation was led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was represented by Central Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher and Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was represented by Secretary General Dr Redwan Ahmed and Presidium Member Dr Neyamul Bashir, while Khelafat Majlis was represented by its Ameer Abdul Basit Azad and Secretary General Dr Ahmad Abdul Kader.
Other parties present included the Rastro Songskar Andolon, represented by Chief Coordinator Hasnat Kayum and Media Coordinator Syed Hasibuddin Hossain; the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), represented by Chairman Mohammad Mojibur Rahman Bhuiyan Monju and Secretary General Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad; and Nagorik Oikya, represented by President Mahmudur Rahman Manna and General Secretary Shahidullah Kaiser.
The National Democratic Movement (NDM) was represented by Chairman Bobby Hajjaj and Secretary General Mominul Amin, while Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish was represented by Senior Nayeb-e-Ameer Yusuf Ashraf and Secretary General Maulana Jalal Uddin Ahmad. Ganosamhati Andolon leaders Zonayed Saki and Abul Hasan Rubel attended, alongside Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) General Secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmud Swapon and Senior Vice President Tania Rob.
Gono Odhikar Parishad was represented by President Nurul Haque Nur and General Secretary Md Rashed Khan, while the Bangladesh Biplobi Workers Party was represented by General Secretary Saiful Haque and Political Council Member Bohnishikha Jamali. The Jatiyatabadi Somomona Jote delegation included Coordinator Dr Fariduzzaman Farhad and Khondaker Lutfor Rahman, president of JAGPA. From the 12-Party Alliance, Spokesperson Shahadat Hossain Selim attended.
Islami Andolon Bangladesh was represented by Presidium Member Professor Ashraf Ali Akon and Senior Joint Secretary General Gazi Ataur Rahman, while the Zaker Party delegation included Vice Chairman Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan and Joint General Secretary of Gazipur district Student Front Zahirul Hasan Sheikh.
Other signatories included the Jatiya Gonofront, represented by Aminul Haque Tipu Biswas and Manjurul Arefin Litu Biswas; the Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party, represented by Abdul Majed Athari and Musa Bin Izhar; the Bangladesh Labour Party, represented by Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran and Acting Secretary General Khondaker Mirajul Islam; and the Bhasani Janashakti Party, represented by Chairman Sheikh Rafiqul Islam and Secretary General Dr Mohammad Abu Yusuf.
Also present were representatives of Jamiate Ulamaye Islam Bangladesh, including Vice President Abdur Rab Yusufee and Secretary General Maulana Manjurul Islam Afendi; the Islami Oikya Jote, represented by Chairman Abdul Kader and Secretary General Sakhawat Hossain Raji; and the Amjonotar Dal, represented by President Mia Moshiuzzaman and General Secretary Tariq Rahman.
In addition, Mir Mostafizur Rahman, father of martyr Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdha, and Shamsi Ara Begum, mother of martyr Tahir Zaman Priyo, attended the signing ceremony on behalf of the families of the July martyrs.
Although Gonoforum, led by Dr Kamal Hossain, attended the July National Charter signing ceremony, the party did not sign the charter. Gonoforum was represented by Acting President Subrata Chowdhury and General Secretary Md Mizanur Rahman at the event.
Gonoforum General Secretary Mizanur Rahman shared this information while talking to The Daily Star following the signing ceremony. He, however, said Gonoforum is likely to sign the July Charter later after reviewing the final copy.
Meanwhile, leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and four left-leaning political parties did not join the event.
The four leftist parties are: Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Basod), Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), and Bangladesh Jasod.
