Tarique Rahman's nomination submitted for Dhaka-17, Bogura-6
Nomination papers on behalf of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman have been submitted today to contest the 13th national parliamentary election from Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituencies.
For running the race from Dhaka-17, the nomination papers were filed at the office of the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner in Segunbagicha around 12:00pm .
Abdus Salam, BNP chairperson's adviser, accompanied by Professor Dr Farhad Halim Donar, chief adviser of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), submitted the nomination on Tarique Rahman's behalf.
Speaking at a briefing with journalists later, Abdus Salam expressed gratitude to all, saying city residents warmly welcomed Tarique Rahman after 17 years in exile. He added that they expect the people of Dhaka-17 to spontaneously cast their votes for him in the February 12 election.
Around 2:30pm, local BNP leaders submitted the nomination to Bogura Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Toufiqur.
Those present at the time included Rezaul Karim Badsha, president of Bogura district BNP; Mosharraf Hossain, acting general secretary; Ali Azgor Talukdar Hena, former general secretary; VP Saiful Islam, former district BNP president; and other party leaders.
Speaking to local journalists after the submission, Rezaul Karim said Tarique had led BNP's political struggle against the Awami League government for the past 17 years and would contest the Bogura-6 seat as the party's candidate.
"On his behalf, we have filed the nomination today," he said.
The BNP leader added that Tarique had sought prayers from the people of Bogura for both BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and himself. He also said Tarique would arrive in Bogura soon, and that the district BNP planned to organise a mass reception to welcome him.
Yesterday (Sunday), the nomination papers were collected for him. After returning from London following 17 years in exile, Tarique was registered as a voter of the Dhaka-17 constituency on Saturday.
