Woman dies by suicide 'due to harassment'

A woman in Noagaon village of Ajmeriganj upazila, Habiganj, died by suicide last night, allegedly after enduring prolonged harassment over the phone.

The deceased, Tahmina Akhter, was the wife of Mohsin Mia and the mother of one child.

According to police and local sources, Subesh Mia, 22, son of Abul Kashem Mia from the same village, had been "harassing" Tahmina over the phone for a long time.

Two days before the incident, her family verbally informed Ajmeriganj police about the matter.

Yesterday, while some of her family members were at the police station to file a written complaint, Tahmina consumed pesticide at home. Locals and her family rushed her to the Upazila Health Complex, but she died on the way, said family members.

Police recovered her body and sent it to Habiganj Sadar Hospital for an autopsy, said ABM Maidul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Ajmeriganj Police Station.

"The deceased's family accused Subesh of harassment, and we are trying to arrest the accused," he added.

Subesh has been absconding since the incident.
