Video of mob beating up traffic sergeant in Dhaka’s Jurain goes viral
A traffic police sergeant came under attack from a group of people in Dhaka's Jurain area this morning following an altercation with commuters on a motorcycle.
Sergeant Ali Hossain, of Wari Traffic Division, is undergoing treatment at Central Police Hospital in Dhaka's Rajarbagh, said Biplob Kumar Ray, assistant superintendent of police of the division.
Saidul Islam, deputy commissioner of Wari Traffic Division Police, said the incident took place around 9:30am when the sergeant stopped a motorcyclist – with a woman as pillion passenger – for going on the wrong side of the road.
The initial incident was captured in the body cam of the sergeant where it was seen that the motorcyclist got agitated as the police officer wanted to see papers.
"Instead of showing the papers, the man wanted to see paper (ID) from the police officer in uniform," he said, adding that the man and the woman identified themselves as lawyer and journalist.
"All of a sudden, the woman shouted: 'Why did you touch me?' The body cam did not show the woman, who got off the bike, as the sergeant was talking to the man on the bike," he added.
Later, a scuffle ensued between the sergeant and the two commuters. Then, the body cam got displaced and the incident was not recorded properly, he added.
Later, others, including ride sharing motorcyclists and passersby joined them and started beating the police officer, the DC said, citing footage of the camera.
The mob also attacked a traffic police box nearby.
The DC said local police then rushed there and took the two commuters in custody.
The Daily Star could not talk to the motorcycle rider and the pillion passenger for their comments.
However, many people shared a short video clip of the attack on social media, saying the traffic sergeant was manhandled by people in Dhaka's Jurain area for "harassing" a commuter on a motorbike.
The video footage shows a group of people attacking the police officer.
