Mass uprising: Former Meherpur Zilla Parishad chairman arrested

Police arrested Meherpur Zilla Parishad's former chairman Abdur Salam today in connection with an attack on students on August 5 last year.

He was arrested from his residence in Meherpur town this morning, said Abdul Karim, additional superintendent of police (Sadar circle) in Meherpur.

The arrest was made as a case was filed against Abdur Salam, also a member of Meherpur district unit of Awami League, under the Anti-Terrorism Act on August 20, 2024.

Sheikh Mejbah Uddin, officer-in-charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station, said that the AL man will be produced before the court after interrogation at the police station.

Abdur Salam was elected as the chairman of Meherpur Zila Parishad on October 17, 2022 as an Awami League candidate.

After the fall of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, he was removed from the post of chairman.
