Ivy denied bail in three cases

A Narayanganj court today rejected the bail petitions of former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Dr Salina Hayat Ivy in three cases filed over casualties during last year's student movement.
After the hearing, Judge Abu Shamim Azad of Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge's Court rejected the bail petition around 11:00am.
Omar Faruk Noyon, the court's acting public prosecutor, confirmed the development.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court also denied bail in two other cases.
Advocate Awlad Hossain, counsel for Ivy, said, "Dr Salina Hayat Ivy served as mayor for three consecutive terms. In her political career, not a single general diary was filed against her. The cases over the student protest do not contain any specific allegations against her. Therefore, she deserved bail in the interest of justice."
He added that they plan to appeal the decision in a higher court.
On August 19 last year, following the fall of the Awami League government amid massive student and public protests, Ivy -- along with other city mayors -- was removed by the interim government. She also served as senior vice president of the Narayanganj district unit of the Awami League.
Ivy was first named as an accused in a murder case over the killing of garment worker Minarul Islam on September 3 last year. She was arrested on May 9 this year from her home in the Deobhog area of the city.
Police said Ivy has so far been shown arrested in at least three cases filed when she was accused in six cases over the July uprising.
