TV show host and Islamic scholar Maolana Sheikh Nurul Islam Faruqi was murdered by extremists, including Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) member 'Jamai' Faruque, over ideological differences, according to the charge sheet submitted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

However, "Jamai Faruque" and five others were dropped from the charge sheet due to the inability to locate their full addresses during the investigation.

Investigation Officer KM Abul Kashem, an additional special superintendent of CID, submitted the charge sheet against six suspects to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on November 5.

The development came to light today after The Daily Star obtained a copy of the charge sheet.

The accused named in the charge sheet are Hadisur Rahman Sagar, Abdullah Al Tasnim Nahid, Rafiqul Islam Fardin, Abu Raihan Mahmud Abdul Hadi, Mahmud Ibn Bashar, and Ratan Chowdhury alias Engineer Rakibul Islam Reaz.

Among them, Sagar, Nahid, and Ratan are in custody, while the remaining three suspects are fugitives.

During the investigation, Sagar and Nahid provided confessional statements before magistrates, detailing the planning and execution of the killing.

The charge sheet states that the accused believed Faruqi was spreading a "false ideology" of Islam and Allah on the media that contradicted the Holy Quran and Hadith, prompting their plan to murder him.

Faruqi's killing occurred on August 27, 2014, at his East Rajabazar home in Dhaka. Assailants slit his throat, and the next day, his son Faisal Faruqi filed a murder case, naming eight to nine unidentified individuals.

Faruqi, aged around 60 at the time of his death, was the international affairs secretary of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and a presidium member of Bangladesh Islami Front.

He was also the owner of Faruqi Tours and Travels Private Ltd, a hajj agency, and a presenter of Islamic programs on two private television channels.
