Ex-SP Babul Akhter walks out of Ctg jail
Former superintendent of police Babul Akhter was released on bail from Chattogram Central Jail this afternoon.
He walked out of the prison around 5:30pm.
At the jail gate, he was received by his wife, Ishrat Jahan Mukta, along with other relatives.
The High Court on November 27 granted ad-interim bail to Babul in a case filed over murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in 2016.
On December 1, the bail documents reached at the jail, but his bail procedure got stuck due to complications following a stay petition on the HC bail order. Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain filed the petition.
However, the Supreme Court's chamber judge today upheld the HC of Babul's ad-interim bail, clearing his release.
On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead near the GEC intersection in Chattogram while dropping off her son for a school bus. After the incident, Babul filed a case at the Panchlaish Police Station against three unidentified individuals.
In 2020, the Police Bureau of Investigation took over the case from the Chattogram Metropolitan Police and began re-investigating the incident.
As part of the investigation, Babul was taken to the PBI office from his Mohammadpur residence in Dhaka for questioning in his wife Mitu murder case. Later, in 2021, he was shown arrested in connection with the murder case filed by his father-in-law, accusing him of being the mastermind behind Mitu's murder.
