Babar seeks acquittal in 10-truck case

Former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar yesterday sought acquittal in the 10-truck arms haul case in Chattogram.
Babar's defence counsel Mohammad Shishir Manir prayed to the High Court to acquit his client from the charges in that case.
He told the court that Babar had been falsely implicated in the case for political reasons. The prosecution could not produce any credible evidence or trustworthy witness in support of the charges brought against Babar, he said.
Advocate Shishir Manir said this while placing arguments on behalf of Babar before the HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter during the hearing for the 23rd day on the death reference and appeals in the case.
After concluding the day's proceedings, the HC bench fixed Thursday to resume the hearing.
Lawyer Shishir Manir argued that the prosecution could not produce any credible evidence to show that Luftuzzaman Babar issued a direction to release five accused who were arrested on the date of occurrence and there he can't be criminally liable for the charge under section 25B of the special powers act.
The prosecution alleged that he (Babar) influenced the investigation process and tried to save the real culprits diverting the blame to innocent people.
A co-accused of the case has mentioned his (Babar) name, however, no such allegation was specifically made by the prosecution and hence he is liable to be acquitted from the conviction and sentence, the defence lawyer argued.
