An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped yesterday while visiting her sister's house in Magura town, police said.

The victim is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Meanwhile, police have detained the child's brother-in-law and his father for interrogation in connection with the incident.

According to the victim's family, the girl, who lives with her parents in a village in Magura's Sreepur, had travelled to Magura district town a few days ago to visit her elder sister's family.

Her sister said that she went to work yesterday morning and found her sister lying unconscious on the floor after returning home around noon.

The child was initially taken to the 250-bed Sadar Hospital in Magura. As her condition worsened, she was transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Later, she was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital last night for advanced treatment.

Speaking to this correspondent, the child's mother alleged that someone found her daughter alone at her sister's house and raped her.

Subash Ranjan Halder, a doctor in the emergency unit of Magura Sadar Hospital, said that preliminary examinations suggest the girl may have been a victim of rape and attempted murder.

"There was extensive bleeding from her private parts," the doctor said.

He also noted injury marks on her neck, suggesting an attempt to strangle her. Additionally, there were scratches on several parts of her body.

"We referred her to Faridpur Medical College Hospital as her condition was critical," he added.

Magura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ayub Ali said police detained two people -- victim's sister's husband and his father --from the house this morning for questioning.

Professor Dr Md Shamidur Rahman, head of the Pediatric Surgery Unit at DMCH, said, "The child's condition is stable now. However, we will be able to provide more details tomorrow."

Meanwhile, local residents held a protest march in Magura town this afternoon, condemning the incident and demanding strict punishment for the perpetrator.
