Eight Awami League leaders and activists, including its Dhaka district unit general secretary Mahabubur Rahman, were detained today.

The detention was made while they went to pay tribute at the National Memorial in Savar on the occasion of the Victory Day today, said Abu Bakar Siddique, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station.

He said that the detainees went there around 1:00pm to create chaos in the area.

When asked about if any explosives were recovered from their possessions, the OC said, "No such thing was found. They are now being questioned at the police station."

However, an Awami League leader, wishing not to be named, told The Daily Star that the AL men went to the memorial to pay respects to the brave martyrs.

This is nothing but harassment, he added.
