Four people were killed in a fire at a multi-story building in the capital's Shahjadpur area today.

The deceased could not be identified immediately.

The fire started on the first floor of the six-storey building at 12:31pm, prompting a swift response from two units of the Baridhara Fire Station, said Talha Bin Jashim, an official Fire Service Media Wing

The firefighters brought the blaze under control at 1:04pm.

Later, Syed Monirul Islam, senior station officer of Baridhara Station, told the Daily Star that the fire broke out at a beauty parlour named Golden Tulip Lounge.

One of the bodies was recovered from a bathroom of the second floor and three others were recovered from the fifth floor, near the staircase leading to the roof.

It is assumed that the three victims whose bodies were found on the fifth floor tried to take shelter on the rooftop but they could not as the door of the roof was locked, the fire official said.

All of them died due to suffocation from smoke, he added.
