Dhaka Airport fire under control
 
The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has said that the fire that broke out at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 2:15pm today has been brought under control.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters in a media notification said the fire was brought under control around 9:18pm.
In a press release, the ministry said the fire was brought under control through the prompt and coordinated efforts by the Fire Service and airport authorities.
No casualties were reported in the incident, authorities confirmed. Flight operations resumed at 9:20pm.
 
The adviser to the ministry was present at the airport, closely monitoring the situation, while all relevant agencies are working in coordination.
A probe will soon be launched to determine the cause of the fire and necessary measures will be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents, the release added.
The fire originated in the cargo section near Gate No 8 of the airport around 2:15pm, sources at the fire service said.
 
Thirty-six firefighting units were working to douse the blaze.
At least five flights of different airlines scheduled to land at the airport have been diverted to Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram and Osmani International Airport in Sylhet, sources at Dhaka airport told The Daily Star.
 
The airfield at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka was closed until 9:00pm today, Dhaka airport sources said.
Meanwhile, all outbound passengers are waiting at HSIA as more than a dozen flights were delayed.
