Deaths of 3 IUT students: BREB suspends 7 officials

Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) has suspended seven officials a day after three students were electrocuted to death when a bus came into contact with a high-voltage overhead power line in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila yesterday.
Those who have been suspended are Deputy General Manager (DGM, Sadar-Technical) Kamlesh Chandra Barman of Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity-2; Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Maona Zonal Office Khondaker Mahmudul Hasan; Assistant General Manager (AGM) Md Tanvir Salauddin; Junior Engineer Matiur Rahman; Linemen Parvez Mia, Shakhawat Hossain, and Abul Kashem.
Following an initial investigation, the BREB suspended the seven officials last night, Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity-2 General Manager Md Akmal Hossain confirmed it The Daily Star at 11:00am today.
The incident occurred around 11:00am yesterday involving a picnic bus from the Islamic University of Technology (IUT).
Three of its students were fatally electrocuted, prompting senior officials from the BREB to immediately visit the scene. According to law enforcers and witnesses, around 400 students of IUT left the campus yesterday morning and were on their way to Matir Maya Eco Resort in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila.
They were traveling in six BRTC double-decker buses and three microbuses, all of which passed through a regional road in front of the Udaykhali China Project in Telihati union around 11:00am.
Locals said double-deckers do not usually ply that particular road.
Almost all the vehicles passed the area safely, but one of the buses came into contact with a high-voltage overhead power line.
The entire body of bus was electrocuted.
The three students attempted to jump off the bus but were electrocuted after they came in contact with the vehicle's body, Shamim Ahmed, a local who witnessed the incident, said yesterday.
The three died on the spot, while the 15 injured were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and are in critical condition, said Joynal Abedin Mondal, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Model Police Station.
