Winter is considered the most stylish season for a reason. Sweaters, jackets, and scarves -- there's always something in the winter wardrobe to make a statement with, every day. While skirts are not the most natural choice for winter for evident reasons, there is a skirt trend that is back from a hiatus and is staking its claim right at the top of fashion charts -- the midi skirt.

Back from the 90s when it almost monopolised the party fashion scene, the midi skirt is trending again in celebrity wardrobes. Recently, Akshata Murthy wore it and we say, if it's good for the Prime Minister's home, it's good for us. But the question is, how do we style it? Despite its popularity, the average fashion savvy woman still has a hard time styling this timeless piece. Fortunately, fashion experts and experienced stylists have some tried and tested tips.

Traditional Fitted

The first one is to keep the proportions in mind. Fitted tops look great on flared skirts -- so knitted tops, body suits and tank tops all look great -- depending on the occasion and accessory blend of the outfit. Dressier tops such as off-the-shoulder uppers can make the whole look even fancier.

Oversized and Comfy

Newer top styles such as comfortable, oversized sweaters look just as lovely on midi skirts. Keep the look simple with a slight tuck-in, minimal to no jewellery, mid length boots, a chic pair of sunglasses and an oversized bag.

Monochrome - All for One

Another new and hip trend that has been making the rounds is the monochrome look. The outfit looks great as a formal-casual, especially if it's a pencil skirt. Just add a thin belt, a sleek clutch, and some hoops for the ears to glam things up. A printed shawl can add a fun factor to the ensemble as well as give you a layer of warmth. Don't forget the heels for this one.

Lacy Stacey

A dreamy, lacy top complements the midi skirt nicely for an evening out. Slim or flared, the contrasting material of the skirt and the top makes for an interesting look, regardless of whether the colour of the top is the same as that of the skirt. A lacy top on a contrasting printed midi would also look great with pearl jewellery and a box clutch.

Surprise!

Finally, one can wear a midi in unconventional ways. There's fun in surprise and who knew what a bombastic combination tulle and leather could be? Or what an animal printed top could do for a bright red midi skirt? It is important to strike the right balance with jewellery with these combinations so that one looks elegant and not just gaudy.
