HC halts waste dumping in Moulvibazar Eco Park following Daily Star report
The High Court today imposed an injunction on dumping waste in Borshijora Eco Park of Moulvibazar for the next six months.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks why their failure and inaction to protect and preserve the park from tree and hill cuttings, construction of roads and dumping hazardous wastes should not be declared illegal.
In the rule, the HC asked the respondents to show causes why they should not be directed to take appropriate legal action against the local municipal mayor responsible for dumping hazardous wastes in the eco park and to protect it from damages.
Secretary to the ministry of forest, environment and climate change, director general of department of environment, deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Moulvibazar, chief forest conservator and other officials concerned and Moulvibazar municipality mayor have been made respondents to the rule.
The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil came up with the order and rule following a writ petition filed as a public interest litigation by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) seeking necessary directives on this issue.
BELA filed the wit petition following an article published in The Daily Star on May 30 of 2021 regarding the issue.
