Baridhara residents protest garbage facility near church and school
Residents, teachers, guardians, and students in Dhaka's Baridhara area formed a human chain today, demanding the immediate relocation of a recently installed garbage disposal facility directly in front of St Eugene's School and De Mazenod Church.
The protesters said the facility poses a serious health hazard and is a grave insult to the sanctity of the church and the educational environment of the school. Foul odour, flies, mosquitoes, and unsanitary conditions were endangering children and devotees alike, they said.
In a press release, St Eugene's School Principal Pintu Costa said, "This installation shows utter disregard for our community's sentiments. We have sent multiple letters to the city corporation authorities explaining the problem and the health risks to our children, but our appeals have been ignored."
The demonstrators expressed frustration over the authorities' silence and warned that if their demands continue to be neglected, they will intensify their protests.
"Our demand is clear and firm -- the garbage disposal facility must be relocated to another suitable location where it will not negatively impact religious, educational, or residential areas," they said.
