A fisherman was killed in a crocodile attack in the Sundarbans on Tuesday. His body was recovered that night, nearly seven hours later.
The deceased is Subrata Mondol, 32, from Dhangmari village in Khulna's Dacope upazila.
The incident occurred around 3:30pm in the Karamjal canal under Chandpai range of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, locals said.
Subrata and other fishermen were returning after catching crabs through the canal when he was attacked. The crocodile dragged him underwater, and he went missing.
Villagers retrieved his body around 10:30pm from the Gajalmari area of the canal after hours of searching, said Israfil Boyati, a resident of Dhangmari village who joined the rescuing effort.
Subrata and the others had entered the forest with permission from Dhangmari station of the forest division, according to forest department sources.
Howlader Azad Kabir, officer-in-charge of the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre, said, "The victim's family took his body home at night. Since he entered the forest with permission, his family is entitled to government compensation."
