Veteran Hollywood actor Jim Carrey was presented with an Honorary César Award in Paris on Thursday, recognising his decades-long contribution to the visual arts.

The 64-year-old star, celebrated for his roles in comedies such as “The Mask”, “Liar Liar” and “Dumb and Dumber”, accepted the honour at the Olympia theatre, where he surprised the audience by delivering much of his speech in French.

Carrey attended the ceremony accompanied by his daughter Jane, grandson Jackson and partner Mina. During his remarks, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to his family and paid tribute to his late father, Percy Joseph Carrey, a musician whom he credited with teaching him the values of love, generosity and humour.

Reflecting on his craft, Carrey likened acting to sculpting, saying each character is shaped like clay in an artist’s hands. He described himself as fortunate to have shared his work with audiences who embraced him over the years.

With a career spanning four decades across stand-up comedy, television, film, literature and visual arts, Carrey has also earned acclaim for performances in films such as “The Truman Show” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”.

Concluding his speech, Carrey lightheartedly joked about his French, apologising for any shortcomings and noting that he is still learning the language.

The Honorary César Award recognises individuals for their outstanding contribution to cinema and the arts.
