Jason Momoa exits Justin Lin’s ‘Helldivers’ adaptation
Jason Momoa is no longer attached to star in Sony Pictures’ upcoming film adaptation of the popular video game franchise “Helldivers”, according to reports confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite Momoa’s departure, the project remains in active development. The film will be directed by Justin Lin, best known for his work on the “Fast & Furious” franchise, with a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, whose previous credits include “It” and “Until Dawn”.
Sony has scheduled “Helldivers” for a theatrical release on November 10, 2027.
Produced by PlayStation Productions, the film is based on the hit video game series developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. The franchise includes the original 2015 game and its sequel, which have collectively sold more than 12 million copies worldwide.
Set in a futuristic universe, the games follow an elite military unit known as the Helldivers, tasked with defending “Super Earth” against hostile alien forces.
Sony first announced the adaptation during the 2024 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show, before showcasing the project again during its CinemaCon presentation earlier this year.
The Hollywood Reporter had previously revealed in February that Momoa was expected to lead the film. Lin is producing the project alongside Hutch Parker and Asad Qizilbash.
Momoa remains one of Hollywood’s busiest stars, with several major releases on the horizon. He is set to appear as the DC Comics character Lobo in “Supergirl” opposite Milly Alcock. He is also expected to feature in “Street Fighter” and “Dune: Part Three” later this year.
His upcoming slate additionally includes “A Minecraft Movie Squared” and “Animal Friends”, which co-stars Ryan Reynolds and is currently slated for release in 2027.
Lin’s most recent directorial effort was “Last Days”, released in 2025.
